This species is a winter guest. It forages in salt water at night, feeding on snails and mussels. At daytime it rests in large flocks in protected inlets or brackish or freshwater lakes.
The Greater scaup is a regularly occuring migratory bird species protected under article 4.2 of the Birds Directive (Directive 2009/147/EC).
